Application | N-hydroxymethyl benzamide is an organic intermediate, which can be used in the process of organic synthesis in the laboratory, it can be prepared from benzamide and formaldehyde in one step, and it is reported in the literature that it can be used for the preparation of bacteriostatic ultraviolet absorbers. |
preparation | to a solution of benzamide (70.0g,0.58mol) was added 40% formaldehyde (45.0g,0.60mol) and potassium carbonate (2.00g,14.5mmol) in water (70ml). It was heated on a water bath until a clear solution was formed and then crystallized. Recrystallization from dilute ethanol afforded N-hydroxymethylbenzamide 6282-02-6(79.4g,85%) as a crystalline solid, mp 104 °c. |
uses | organic synthesis, dye intermediates used as dyes, pigment intermediate |
